November 12, 2016 - Pet Fair

This new initiative centers around children reading to orphaned pets which increases the pets' socialization and adoptability! The added benefit is that by reading aloud, children's reading skills soar too. Strong readers get stronger and weaker readers gain confidence in a nonjudgmental environment. Additionally, young people build social skills and have enhanced self-esteem through community volunteerism. Any ages are welcome with parental accompaniment. The "Pet Tales" program is available for dogs and cats at East Lake Pet Orphanage's main location at 10101 East Northwest Highway or at the satellite location just for cats at the East Lake Cat Care Center at at 10040 Shoreview.
Registered readers receive a volunteer orientation and a t-shirt recognizing them as an official East Lake Pet Orphanage Volunteer. Additionally, young readers are automatically eligible for a participation in our Book Swap Club, where any donated children's book can be swapped for another from our library. We think our dogs and cats love hearing about history and geography as much as they love mysteries and fairy tales! Children can also bring assigned reading from school on ANY topic to read to the pets. At the Pet Fair on November 9th the top 3 readers logging the most reading time for the pets will be awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies, a gift certificate to Half Price Books, and will be interviewed and featured in the Orphanage newsletter.
